I am Sumeru. I was born in 1987. I'm a filmmaker and musician currently based in Goa.
I am a trained sculptor (Bachelor of Fine Arts). I never pursued it beyond college. I took to acting in college and went on to act in some really bad Kannada soaps and some really good plays. So, I started off as an actor.
While acting, I was drawn to writing and direction. I pursued a post-graduation in film-video communication (Master of Design) to become a filmmaker. I made documentaries, assisted on TVCs and made corporate films. I was not happy with the work. I learnt that money was a terrible motivator for me, even if alluring.
Music persisted throughout. I sing alright and can play chords on the piano. I would like to call myself a musician for as long as I can.
In early 2019, I came face-to-face with the life I was building myself, living in a city that had nothing new to offer, surrounding myself with people I was learning nothing from. I moved cities and decided to do nothing for a while. And then the pandemic hit. I'm part of a minority for whom it was a blessing. A one-year break turned into a three-year period of soul-searching, during which I questioned everything, learnt to say No and re-organised my life. It is the most challenging thing I've ever done.
- I started a weekly personal newsletter in Jan 2021 called Sunday Slant. I urge you to read/subscribe (it's free). I describe it as weekly musings and other nonsense with interesting links. I have a lot of fun writing it.
- I started uploading more music on my YouTube channel. I have been mulling over the idea of starting a vlog.
- I'm currently working on a spec-script and my debut single.
