I'm not trying to convince you

It hurts you. You get angry.
The anger travels from your gut and pops into a nerve on your forehead.
The other person doesn't get what you've said. You want to be understood, you sought their approval even? It doesn't seem like they're giving you that.
You're exposed and feeling vulnerable.
You need a hug from your mother, but you're 47 and too proud to go ask. Or 21.
You can pull a hasty retreat from here, just by saying:
"I'm not trying to convince you."
Phew. The balance of power restored.
But, if you were trying to, remember to expect the good only when you can accept the bad.
They aren't separate.
